Elaine Hardman

While I am primarily a potter, I also create Tin Can Folk Art. Local people may remember Charley Orlando whose work is included in several reference books on the art of the tin can. Charley was a friend and also my guide into the world of colorful tin can work.

The cans used are actually tin coated steel cans that are sold full of cookies, popcorn, coffee or candies. My favorites designs are the bright and memorable graphics of the 1950s and 1960s. Sometimes they become 3D sculptures and a few of my designs have been purchased by the International Kamm Teapot Foundation.

Most of my work is meant to hang on a wall and often references a rooster or chicken or fish. Vintage cracker and coffee cans make great mirror frames and kitchen signs. Smaller pieces are meant to be tree ornaments. I also have decorative switch plate covers.
